Premiership in sight

MOLONG coach Mark Giumelli thinks he has the side to take out the President’s Cup title from fifth spot.

They travel to Mudgee on Sunday to face the Wombats in the President’s Cup elimination semi-final and after finishing fifth following the regular season, every game could be their last.

Molong need to win four straight games to take out the President’s Cup title and that is something Giumelli believes they can do if they find some consistency.

“I don’t think anyone is ready to finish just yet,” Giumelli said.

“We’re up against it but I look at the team we’ve got on paper ... it’s as strong as we’ve had in the past so I think we have the team to do it, we just have to put together four weeks.”

But first Molong have to get past Mudgee who are new to President’s Cup this season after playing in the Blowes Menswear Cup in the past.

The Wombats hold the advantage over Molong this season with Mudgee winning both of their encounters this year.

Both of those matches were in Mudgee, so Giumelli believes his side knows exactly what to expect from the fourth-placed Wombats on Sunday.

Fledgling fly-half John Mulhall has been impressive in the lead-up to the finals with his kicking game proving valuable.

Aside from Mulhall, who is a proven performer come finals time, Giumelli doesn’t think his side boasts an obvious game-breaker so it will take a quality team performance to get past Mudgee.

“I’d like to think playing as a team is going to be the thing that will get us through,” Giumelli said.

Wellington hosts Yeoval tomorrow night in the qualifying semi-final with the loser of that match to face the winner between Molong and Mudgee next weekend.

MOLONG: 1 Gordon Welsh, 2 Dean Butler, 3 Graeme Mostyn, 4 Bryan Mulhall, 5 Paul Glynn, 6 Stu Hobbs, 7 Kyle Travis, 8 Hugh Gardiner, 9 Louis Fardell, 10 John Mulhall, 11 Carl Reid, 12 Miles Harrison, 13 Brendan Wood, 14 Kyle McGovern, 15 Dan Toynton.
