ORANGE Emus snared fifth spot in the Blowes Menswear Cup on Saturday and a place in next weekend’s elimination semi-final with a 51-0 bonus-point win over Parkes on Saturday.
Emus’ nine-try romp at Endeavour Oval now sets up a sudden death semi-final in Dubbo against Dubbo Rhinos.
Rhinos beat Forbes 31-6 to claim fourth spot and relegate the Platypi to sixth, with Emus’ win moving them into the top five at the expense of Forbes.
Emus co-coach Matt Greatbatch was a proud but somewhat soggy figure after the match on Saturday, following a first-half downpour, as his side qualified for the finals after losing six of their opening seven games.
“A lot of people wrote us off pretty early on in the show with the couple of losses that we had but the boys always believed in themselves and they’re just playing really good football at the moment,” Greatbatch said.
“That was good footy in the conditions that we had.”
Emus needed a bonus-point victory to maximise their chances of sneaking into the top five and they came out of the change rooms accordingly.
Barnstorming No.8 Keith Howarth crossed for two tries in the opening 12 minutes to help Emus set a cracking pace as they were scoring at a point a minute.
Inside centre Mitch Dansey then took on the Parkes defensive line in the 14th minute and went over for the third
try before captain Nick Luelf secured the bonus point in the 21st minute with the fourth try after two strong runs from fullback Joel Plummer.
“We knew we had to get the points today, we had to get the five points and they were really keen,” Greatbatch said.
Emus were in total control at this stage and were playing some tremendous rugby with two tries later in the first half to hooker Al Hattersley getting the home side out to a 36-0 lead at the break.
Fly-half BJ McKenna then crossed soon after the break before errors began to plague Emus as the ball became greasy.
The result and the bonus point were already secured, so the 14 second-half handling errors weren’t costly.
Parkes’ only highlight of the game came in the 57th minute when fullback Dennis Webb made a sliding catch to close down a dangerous Emus kick.
Emus put on another two tries to close out the game with wingers Ben Ruddy and Nik Granger both crossing for the 51-point victory.
Granger had a disappointing day with the boot, missing five of his eight conversion chances, while Dansey failed to convert one try from the sideline.
In other Blowes Menswear Cup games, Charles Sturt University Bathurst came close to upsetting minor premiers Dubbo Kangaroos, with the students narrowly going down 24-21. Bathurst Bulldogs also held out Cowra 6-3 in a low-scoring affair.
