City keep hopes alive

ORANGE City are still a mathematical chance of making the Blowes Menswear Cup semi-finals but coach Michael Gray admits it will take a miracle for his side to finish in the top five.

The eighth-placed Lions first need to produce a bonus point win over third-placed Narromine in the final round tomorrow in Narromine.

And then they will need Forbes (fourth) to beat Dubbo Rhinos (fifth) by more than seven points, and Dubbo Kangaroos (first) to defeat Charles Sturt University Bathurst (seventh).

Having to rely on two results to go their way is far from ideal but they will not be the biggest aspects of the miracle with Orange City also needing the last-placed and win-less Parkes side to upset Orange Emus (sixth).

The stars will well and truly need to align for Orange City to finish in fifth and Gray knows this only too well.

“As I said to the blokes, we’re on life support but we’re not dead yet,” Gray said.

“If we win and get a bonus point we have to rely on everything to fall our way but realistically it will be a miracle.”

Keeping things in perspective, Gray would instead be happy to see his side merely come away from Narromine with a win over the Gorillas.

This would be a great way for the Lions to finish their season with Narromine stamping themselves as one of the top teams in the competition this season.

“It’s a good road trip to finish the season with,” Gray said.

“From our perspective, we’d just like to finish with a win.

“If they’re looking towards next week, we may be able to catch them unawares.”

Narromine were able to post a 39-22 win over the Lions back in May when they travelled to Pride Park and the Gorillas should be stronger at home tomorrow.

Orange City will field the same line-up from their 15-13 win over Rhinos last Saturday and they will again be given the directive to enjoy themselves.

ORANGE CITY:1 Nathan Short, 2 Peter Friend, 3 John Gander, 4 James Weston, 5 Adam Grant, 6 Chris Barrett, 7 Mark Nunn, 8 Josh Tremain (c), 9 Ollie Stone, 10 Michael Sparks, 11 Dan Sandford, 12 Mitch McCabe, 13 Dan Muldoon, 14 Pat Russell, 15 Tom Sheridan.
