WOODBRIDGE CUP
CANOWINDRA Tigers roared their way into next week’s final with a come-from-behind second-half display to down Condobolin Rams 22-18 after the Rams raced to an 18-4 half-time lead.
Condobolin had the wind behind them in the first half but did not really use it to their advantage, managing just three tries to the Tigers’ one four-pointer to Phil Butler.
The Condo boys bombed several tries - but Canowindra’s defence was tigerish on a rain-soaked ground.
The Tigers went straight on the attack in the second half, scoring two good tries to evergreen second-rower Andrew Pull in the first 10 minutes of the half, which were both converted by Tigers halfback Rob Burn, who was dictating play with a good kicking game also using the wind to his advantage.
The heavy conditions on the day reduced the game to a real slog, both sides having trouble holding the ball.
Condo attacked but the Tigers’ defence stood up and repelled several of the Rams’ try-scoring chances.
The Rams’ big men were starting to tire and when they had a player sin-binned with 13 minutes to go this allowed Canowindra’s little men, led by Burn, to fire in attack.
Condobolin were just holding on but the Tigers launched one last go at the Rams’ line, Butler scoring his second with just four minutes to go to secure a four-point win.
In the second game, Molong Bulls kept their season alive with an 18-6 win over a gutsy Peak Hill Roosters after they led just 6-0 at half-time.
Peak Hill threw everything at Molong in the early stages of the first half but Molong stood tall with some solid defence.
When the Bulls had possession Peak Hill showed some resolve with some good defence on their own line.
It took until the 30th minute for Molong to open the scoring when Nigel Mullins crossed for a deserved try, which Andrew Delaney converted for 6-0.
Molong came out in the second half with Rod Jones and the Bulls attack building in confidence with the wind at their backs.
They launched raid after raid on the Roosters’ line which finally broke, Jones scoring two tries which Drady converted to give Molong an 18-0 lead with 15 minutes to go.
Two good games considering the wet, heavy conditions before a good crowd which paid $2500 through the gate, setting up two big finals games at Grenfell involving all four sides from the centre of the Woodbridge Cup competition when Manildra Rhinos lock horns again with Molong Bulls at 1pm and the Cargo Blue Heelers battle it out with Canowindra Tigers at 2.30pm in Grenfell.
The two winners on the day will go on to fight it out for the title of Woodbridge Cup champions in 2008.
