CARGO dispelled any preconception on Sunday that grand finals are won up the middle when they beat Manildra 30-10 to claim the Woodbridge Cup double at Cowra’s Sid Kallas Oval.
The 20-point grand final win adds the premiership to their minor premiership and caps off a strong year for the Blue Heelers.
Celebrations continued yesterday with captain-coach Nigel Thornberry still overjoyed about beating the Rhinos at their third attempt this year.
Manildra boast a formidable forward pack and Thornberry devised a plan to limit their influence over the decider and he credits that for the win.
“We’re ecstatic. We hadn’t beaten Manildra before,” Thornberry said.
“We had a game plan, we went out and we did it and we stuck to it.
“Manildra have a big forward and we just played it out wide.”
Cargo got out to a 16-0 lead at half-time and while Manildra were much improved in the second half, the Heelers still controlled the game to run out 20-point victors.
Thornberry praised the performances of five-eighth Matt Watson and front-rower Mark Williamson.
