WOODBRIDGE CUP
CARGO Blue Heelers are the 2008 Woodbridge Cup champions after defeating Manildra Rhinos 30-10 in Cowra on Sunday before a large crowd which paid $7500 through the gate.
Both sides started cautiously with some good sets in the early stages. Cargo opened the scoring when Stan Tulevu gathered a loose bomb to score after 13 minutes.
At the 16th minute mark, Manildra were on the attack but came unstuck when Cargo fullback John Rose intercepted and ran 80 metres to score under the posts for a 10-0 lead.
The Rhinos kept attacking but Cargo held strong with some solid defence, their forwards, led by Jed Reid, holding the big Rhinos pack, putting the big ball-playing forwards to ground. Cargo scored again soon after when experienced bench player Grant Spurr drew the defence and gave a well-timed pass to the danger man Tim Shepard, who sprinted away to score unopposed to extend Cargo’s lead to 16-0 at half-time.
Manildra’s woes were worsened in the 32nd minute when captain-coach Peter Townsend was sin-binned for 10 minutes. The break could not have come quicker for the Rhinos, who looked tired.
In the second half Cargo took up the attack once again and threw the ball around which saw Leon Sutherland score the try of the match. When captain-coach Nigel Thornberry chipped over the top Sutherland got a perfect bounce, kicked again and won the race to the line to score a great try, extending Cargo’s lead to 20-0 after 47 minutes.
The Rhinos kept coming, making some good inroads into Cargo’s half and were finally on the board in the 55th minute with a try to winger Mark Gavin, which made it 20-4.
The Rhinos began to throw everything at Cargo with 25 minutes to go. Play went from end to end, with both sides having scoring chances cut short with some solid defence.
Cargo’s pace out wide showed up again when left winger Willy Reid made a weaving run to score under the uprights, Cargo were home 26-4 with 10 minutes left.
Frustration finally got to captain Peter Townsend in the 72nd minute after a high tackle on a Cargo player, with the referee sending the coach off, leaving the Rhinos down to 12 for the remainder of the game.
Cargo put the sealer on the Cup in the 74th minute when Rose scored his second try. Jason Solomon scored a late consolation try in the 78th minute and Mick Duncan converted to see Cargo finish Woodbridge Cup champions by 20 points.
Five-eighth Mat Watson proved a perfect link between the forwards and backs, with great service and his kicking game was on song, along with his solid defence throughout, leaving him the obvious choice for man of the match.
Canowindra Tigers once again showed their consistency by winning the Garry Tiernan Memorial Shield in the play-off with Molong Bulls, running out winners 40-12 after they led 16-8 at half-time. Captain and five-eighth for the Tigers, Rob Burn, was named man of the match.
