DARTS

THERE were more surprises in the last round of the men’s A grade darts competition with the promoted B grade team Carrington Redbacks getting a 6-5 win over premiers Dad and Daves.

And the Great Western Tigers were on the receiving end of a previous round loss by competition leaders Royal Spitfires and were clean-sheeted 11-0.

The Dad and Daves were without Ken Kostitch, which didn’t help their cause, while the Tigers aren’t quite sure what happened, although the team had never previously been beaten by that margin.

The Redbacks posted some good scores led by Greg Sharkey (100, 125, 95 peg out), Aaron Jones (100), Peter Hamilton (109 121, 154), Dennis Horton (105, 125) and Dave Power (105, 116).

The Dad and Daves’ John Fabar had a good match hitting five 100s, 140 and going out in one game in 16 darts.

The other top scorers were Wayne Wallace (2x100, 133), Scott Griffiths (4x100) and Rob Crowe (3x100).

The Tigers were shocked by their loss, never before beaten by that margin, and team members said the only positive from the night was the early finish.

The games, though, were much closer than the score indicated and most came down to the double, which the Spitfires never miss.

The Spitfires’ top scorers were led by Dave Whitmore (3x100, 140, 105 and for good measure another 180) and Aaron Osborne 5x100, 140, 135, 125, 121).

The others to get high scores were Mark Wiegold (4x100, 2x140), Dave Harvey (120, 116, 100), Rodney Southwell (140, 121, 100) and Bruce Osborne (114).

Barry Wicks had another big night for the Tigers and was on the double with Dave Whitmore in both games. He had five 100s, two 140s and 121.

John Prior (2x100, 122, 121), Will Owers (140, 101), Tim Downey (120), Bill Gayford (100) and Tony Crowhurst (100) were the Tigers’ other top scorers.

The Ophir Gold Diggers had another good win, this time 6-5 over the Victoria Socialites, who were not in a high-scoring mode.

For the Gold Diggers, John Cooper showed his worth with six 100s and 121, while Mick Stevenson (2x100, 138), Max Dennis (2x100, 120), Mark Williams (100, 134, 140) and Brad O’Neil (2x100) played well.

The only Socialites to hit scores more than 100 were Scott Wilson (140) and Damien Caughlan (100).

IN B grade the Metro Sea Hunters after a slow start to the competition moved into second place with a solid 7-4 win over the Carrington Crusaders.

The top scorers were Brian Hardy (140), Barry Briggs (100), Jason Hurford (100, 115), Michael Salmon (100), Chris Kenna (2x100) and Rick McLean (100).

For the Crusaders, Chris Swain had 100 and 101, Jeff Astill (2x100, 101), Dave Girot (2x100) and Bruce Kenny (121, 135).

The Ophir Nuggets came out 6-5 on top over the Royal Half Dozen in another close match.

The Nuggets’ top scorers were Ted Madden (3x100), Grant Bloomfield (100) and Wayne Bell (120, 137).

Grant Birks (101), David Warburton (100) and Paul Schwarz (140) top scored for the Half Dozen.

IN C grade there was lots of drama in the match between the Great Western D and Ds and the Great Western Hogs, won 8-3 by the D and Ds.

The Hogs started a player short but midway through another became sick and had to go home, leaving them with only four, but they pressed on.

The D and Ds’ top scorers were Greg Flannery (133), Michael Feening (100) and Brian Nicholson (100), while the lone top scorer for the Hogs was Chris Kelly with 121.

The Royal Ts just got home 6-5 against the Great Western Devils.

For the Ts, Steve Leonard had two 100s and 114, Daniel Allen (100), Peter Jordan (2x100) and Peter Haranis (124).

The Devils’ top scorers were Luke Pecoski (140) and Rob George (100, 140).

The men’s darts association will meet tonight at the Victoria Hotel at 7.30pm.

All teams should have a representative there.
