BOXING
RICKY Fieldus has kept his winning run going with a victory at a fight night in Cowra on Saturday.
The Orange PCYC boxer stopped Orange Mobsport Boxing’s Kevin Martin in the first round.
Orange PCYC head trainer Bobby Williams was impressed with the way Fieldus fought.
“Ricky hit him with a left cross and Martin was on the ropes,” Williams said.
“He came back and Ricky hit him again and Martin’s knees buckled and the ref stopped the fight.”
“Ricky has five wins from six fights now. Ricky was on fire.”
Darren Morris lost a controversial split decision to Sydney’s Luke Norton.
Williams was certain Morris had won the bout and was stunned when the fight was given to Norton.
“Darren won the first round, the second round was tied and Darren won the the third round but he still didn’t get the decision,” Williams said.
“Darren put an eight count on Luke in the third round. It was a split decision and when they announced the result I was stunned. Darren fought beautifully.”
Orange PCYC boxers Adam Fraser and David Farr had exhibition bouts as did Mobsport’s Shane Webster, and Warren Moses (Mobsport) lost his bout to a Goulburn PCYC fighter.
Morris may have been disappointed in Cowra but he has had some good news.
The teenager has been asked to be part of the NSW PCYC Indigenous program.
This will give him access to training camps and funding so he can further his boxing career.
Williams has been selected as the Western Zone coach for the program.
The Orange PCYC boys are expected to fight in the NSW PCYC City versus Country event at Moree in October.
