Juerga master of Towac Park

HAVE horse, will travel is the philosophy of Rosehill trainer Stephen Hood - and it paid off yesterday with Juerga winning the $20,000 Ultimate Fire Protection Cup at Towac Park.

Owner Peter Harrow sent Juerga down to Hood’s Rosehill stables in November last year but the seven-year-old continues to predominantly race in the country.

The travel to tracks like Dubbo, Muswellbrook and Towac Park are time-consuming but Hood doesn’t mind when he comes away with a winner.

“Peter keeps picking out these races at Dubbo and Orange and Muswellbrook and he likes travelling about, so I bring him up,” Hood said.

“He’s a real good payer so I sort of fall into line a little bit.”

The victory over 2110m makes it 12 wins from 51 starts for Juerga, with yesterday’s win the first in excess of 1600m during the seven-year old’s career.

Chicago Peace ($25.80) got out to the early lead with $2.70 favourite Are You Joeken sitting three wide going around the first bend after jumping from barrier 11.

The Orange Gold Cup winner started to make a move at the 1000m mark and had hit the front with 700m to go.

Juerga ($3.10) was out wide in fourth rounding the final bend when jockey Greg Ryan got the gelding moving with 200m to go and he continued on to beat out Chicago Peace by three quarters of a length, with Flaxmill Road ($11.10) in third.

“I was very pleased with Greg Ryan’s ride,” Hood said.

“He got him to settle and I was very concerned he might over-race, not having a run for three weeks.

“But (Ryan) was adamant he had settled him, he did and he won.”

The race eight victory gave Ryan two winners for the day following his good start in the first on Decadero.

Tye Angland also rode a double with Max Crockett training two winners.

Orange trainers John East and Reg Priest had success yesterday, with both recording a win.
