Hewitt keeps it in the family

GEORGES Plains trainer Bernie Hewitt had no hesitation when he was forced to pick his drive for the $12,000 Canola Cup Final (2100m) in Eugowra today after guiding two of the finalists through the heats.

Hewitt will partner Snazzy Shannon - who he also trains - having decided against taking the drive on Ellery Kriden, trained by Kel Winnell at Spring Hill.

Snazzy Shannon, a bay gelding by Aces N Sevens out of Flo Jo Shannon, will be a likely favourite for the non-TAB event after setting a track record (1:59.4) in his heat, but will by no means have it all his own way.

Canola Cup specialist Neil Day brings an in-form Finn into the race having won three of his last four starts, including a Harold Park event in March.

Another metropolitan winner in Ray Walker’s Sandreamer will be another to watch despite finishing second in his heat.

Interestingly, Snazzy Shannon will race against his half-brother as well, Sevens, trained by Dubbo’s John Lew.

Having set his horse specifically for this event, Hewitt said there was never a doubt about which gig he would end up in.

“I was always going to drive my fella if he got through, I think Kel (Winnell) will probably drive his,” he explained.

“We have set him [Snazzy Shannon] for this for a few months and I was very happy with his work in the heat.”

Hewitt and Day are the only two drivers in the field who have won the event in the past - Day having taken it out five times in its seven- year history.

He is the main danger according to the amiable Georges Plains trainer.

“All the horses in the field are obviously heat winners or runners-up, so they are all in reasonable form,” he said.

“A lot will come back to the draw, I’m pretty happy with what I got (gate four), and Neil drew a bit wider with his horse (six) but I still rate him the biggest danger.

“Sandreamer got interfered with in her heat, too, but still managed to qualify, so it is another to watch.”

Hewitt will look to take Snazzy Shannon forward early, saying that although he can sit and sprint, he also boasts good gate speed and can lead if necessary.

“I’ll be trying to get in front of Finn early and lead most of the way,” he explained.

With many punters unaware that a functional track even existed in Eugowra, the Canola Cup is in fact one of the biggest races in the nation for a non-TAB meeting.

From humble beginnings the Eugowra club has established itself as a profitable one and the annual event is one that plenty of drivers look forward to.

“It isn’t a bad little half-mile track actually,” Hewitt said.

“The committee out there do wonders and the track is kept in really good order. It is all run very professionally.”

The Canola Cup Final goes at 3.30pm this afternoon.
