Reds lock up share of second

THREE second half goals enabled Bloomfield to take out the men’s Premier League Hockey local derby over CYMS on Saturday.

Scores were locked at 1-all at half time in the physically tough encounter but the Reds came out the strongest following the break to win 4-2 and claim the four competition points.

The result moves them into a tie for second on the ladder with St Pat’s and also gives them the upper hand in the Orange men’s hockey community as they played out a 2-all draw against CYMS earlier in the year.

Bloomfield player-coach Matt Lyons said spirits were high amongst his team after the victory.

“They’re pretty happy about it,” Lyons said.

“It was a hard game, they played well and they’re stoked about it.”

CYMS went out well, taking the lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a goal from captain Joe Moore.

Bloomfield counterpart Darren Barrett squared things up six minutes later and the score remained 1-all at half time.

The Reds then made a concerted effort after the break to value possession more and build attacks rather than taking route one on every occasion.

This approach paid off as Nic Sharp put them into the lead for the first time in the game 10 minutes after the break.

Stuart Milne then doubled the advantage five minutes later to give Bloomfield as 3-1 lead and a healthy buffer over their rivals.

However, CYMS were then able to reduce the lead to one goal with eight minutes remaining but a 67th minute Keegan Brooke goal sealed the win for Bloomfield.

CYMS defender Adam Shepherd thought his side were well in the fight at half time but conceded Bloomfield were just too good in the second stanza.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game at half time and to Bloomfield’s credit they came out and played some good hockey,” Shepherd said. “In hindsight, the better side won.”

Lyons was impressed with the defence of his side and he believes that paved the way for the win.

“The defence has been struggling of late but they stood up today and showed the boys boys how to play,” he said after the game.

In Bathurst, St Pat’s and Souths played out a 1-all draw in the derby, both sides frustrated with the result.

For Pat’s mentor Kel Cooke, six unconverted short corners left him thinking about what could have been while Souths failed to convert from the set play five times.
