Kate’s selection shock

KATE Davis was surprised to find out she had been picked in the Premier League Hockey women’s All Star team for the second year.

The Kinross-CYMS player was selected in the inaugural All Stars team after the 2007 season.

She missed Saturday night’s presentation and was shocked when she was told she had been selected in the rep side for back-to-back seasons.

The 22-year-old said she’d had a different focus during the 2008 season, during which Kinross-CYMS finished sixth.

“This year I focused more on the team rather than myself,” Davis said.

“The team is so young and I was trying to build everyone up and support them. I wasn’t getting as many best and fairest points as I did the year before and I thought that was great because that meant the other girls were getting them. They were really shared around this year, which was great.

“I was still happy with how I played this year.”

Davis and Ex-Services’ Jade Warrender were the only two Orange players named in the 16-strong women’s All Star side.

Kayla Orrock (Kinross-CYMS), Hailey Wood (Orange Cougars) and Linda Wilson (Ex-Services) were named as shadows.

Bloomfield’s Matt Lyons, Stuart Milne and Keiran Gentles were selected in the men’s All Star team.

CYMS’ Adam Shepherd and Bloomfield’s Nick Sharp were named as shadows.

The All Star sides are selected to play in representative fixtures during the off-season.

The 2008 All Star sides played the ACT Academy of Sport in November last year.

Davis said she’s looking forward to playing with the All Stars again.

“It was really, really good last time,” Davis said.

“We played Canberra. They were so serious and it was great because it allowed our region to play high-quality teams.

“By the end of the second game we were starting to gel as a team. It would have been nice to get an opportunity to play another game when we were really gelling.”

The All Star women lost their first game 5-0 before being edged out 3-2 in their second match-up.

The All Star men lost their first game 7-4 but backed up for a 1-all draw in their second match. The PLH awards were also announced at Saturday’s presentation.
