Payne the man to beat

MEMBERS and guests will contest an individual 18-hole stableford event at Duntryleague tomorrow, proudly supported by Broadley and Haydon Accountants.

The home of golf presents in outstanding condition and popular financial guru Simon Broadley will set aside the worries of taxation returns and fluctuating business markets in a welcome return to the course.

The nearest the pin trophy is courtesy of the Robin Hood Hotel and after another ace last weekend the president’s bar tab could again be under threat tomorrow evening.

The qualifying rounds of the time-honoured Apples and Email trophies will be contested on Sunday in what promises to be a weekend where too much golf is not enough, a line made famous by my wife Karen ‘the petal’, personal trainer to the stars.

Saturday’s competition comes down to one thing - is the ‘Prince of Vila’, ‘Conqueror of the Orient’ and finest 49-year-old amateur in the world, chairman Robert Payne, hungry enough to chase yet another victory only a week shy of the great man’s 50th birthday? I think he is like his hero the Great White Shark - happy in love, content in life and pumped for success.

Recent rounds have seen a number of players ready to grace the victors’ podium after consistent performances in C grade. Expect Dave Mellier to be in contention for honours. An even shorter-priced observation is Big Tony Sullivan to be around the clubhouse (in some capacity) around presentation time. The electrifying John F Tilston confidently predicted last week: “The only time I ever want 100 mentioned about me in the future is if I live that many years.” As a regular playing partner, this is indeed a bold statement laced with extreme optimism and bravado.

The highly experienced and capable duo, Gus Pro and Gerry Wondrasek, present as likely lads for B grade glory. They both handle the heavy conditions and have recent form on the board. The stableford format will also allow some leverage and error.

The rapidly-improving junior Josh Doherty is another to watch and is one of a growing number of youngsters who will represent our club and their families with great pride and success in future years.

Like Tiger’s domination in North America the rest of the A grade field live in the hope the chairman will have an off day or succumb to the evil green ginger wine like us mere mortals. The erudite punter should look for players with attitude, pride and an aversion to the aforementioned beverage.

Brett Mackin has more attitude than a teenage modelling agency, is proudly bald and prefers beer to wine. He could be a roughie to chase home the ebullient Payne.

After a recent sabbatical due to a mildly overcast day, Kevin Cusack returns to the fairway and in his typically gentlemanly manner and is certain to make a statement. Possessing a swing smoother than Tarzan, ‘the Puss’ is the envy of many a golfer and the predicted blue skies ensure a four-stroke better round for this talented veteran.

Sunday’s qualifying rounds for the Apples and Email reflect some great match-ups and interesting pairings chasing these famous ‘cardboard’ trophies.

Some questions will be answered by mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Will the free-spirited and cavalier game of Mark Jasprizza complement the regimental and disciplined approach of partner Rob ‘Sox’ Williamson?

Can the walking mannequin Peter Mitchell endure being upstaged in the fashion and attractiveness stakes by Billy Callaghan, unquestionably one of the two most handsome and elegant members of the club?

How can the willowy Seb Howell continue to carry the powerfully built KC Min Cheng as he did for the duration of this campaign last year?

Will the living legend WG Carpenter tolerate another 36 holes (minimum) with Grant ‘Greengrass’ Barrett?

Sadly for many, these events have lost their gloss this season as the pre-post favourites MJ Campbell (and partner) and MM Gregor (and partner) are late scratchings due to representative duties in Sydney.

Finally, on behalf of all members and club faithful, sincere best wishes to Dan Smith for a speedy return to good health after a serious injury in the workplace recently.
