SENIOR martial artist Ian Pollet has returned from Japan and the trip proved to be a successful exchange of knowledge and techniques.

The 8th Dan travelled to Okinawa to learn from the revered Kichi Nakamoto, who is a 10th Dan exponent of Rykyu Danto Kobujitsu, which encompasses traditional weapons techniques unique to the Okinawa region.

Pollet was graded as a 5th Dan in this discipline during the trip and has been invited to return by Nakamoto later this year to go for his 6th Dan.

He is excited about returning to Japan and was in awe of Nakamoto, who enjoys almost celebrity status in Okinawa.

“He’s the man in the field and he’s 82,” Pollet said.

“He is amazing in how he moves for an 82-year-old.

“It’s not easy to get trained by him personally and the first meeting I had with him, I must have impressed him.”

Pollet then taught younger martial artists various techniques and his teaching methods impressed, as he was called upon to share his knowledge with various groups.

He was also invited to bring some of his students from his three Pollet’s Martial Arts Centres in Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo to a world karate event next year, so Pollet found the feedback from his trip re-affirming.

“Personally, I know that I am on the right track in my training and education,” he said.

Around 60 of Pollet’s students will head to Sydney this weekend for the winter nationals.
