BOXING
DON’T tell Nicole Parker she hits like a girl.
The 16-year-old will step into the ring for her first amateur bout on Saturday.
Parker has been training at Mobsport Boxing since November last year and is ready for her first fight at Canberra’s Woden Tradies Club.
“I’m excited. I just want to try my best and do coach proud,” Parker said.
Parker started training with Mobsport head coach Jake Kenney after her friends took up boxing for fitness.
While her friends got fit, she went one step further.
“She asked me to teach her to fight and I thought she was joking,” Kenney said.
“I put her on the hand pads and I was impressed.”
Since then Parker has been committed to training, running with national champion Sam Ah-See each morning and sparring against the boys.
Kenney said the boys hadn’t gone easy on her and she hadn’t asked them to.
“There’s no quit in her,” Kenney said.
“I got a girl up here who’s done a bit of boxing before to spar Nic. Nic hit her nine times and it was all over.”
On Saturday the southpaw will fight Canberra’s Sarah Delfino.
The Canberra boxer is 15-years-old and weighs 54kg, three kilograms lighter than Parker.
Kenney said they don’t know anything else about Parker’s opponent so they’ll keep to a simple game plan.
The goal is for Parker to learn from her first bout and a win would be a bonus.
“I’ve coached another girl before but this is the first one I’ve put in the ring,” Kenney said.
“She’ll go well. She’s got great power for a girl.”
Parker is enjoying boxing and said she’s keen to see where the sport might take her.
Ah-See will also step into the ring for Mobsport Boxing on Saturday night at Woden.
