CRICKET
CAVALIERS batsman Trent Colley may have won the 2007-08 Mitchell Cricket Council senior cricketer of the year but he believes his best is yet to come.
The 24-year-old was awarded the prestigious honour at the Mitchell meeting last weekend.
Colley (pictured right) joins an impressive group of players who have won the award, including Adam Shepherd, Allen Sullivan, Damian Toohey and many others.
“There’s a lot of good names on there. There’s quite a few handy cricketers,” Colley said while looking over the shield.
“I’ve never won this before. By the looks of the names on it, Orange has had a bit of a stronghold on it.”
Colley said he was happy with his season, during which his representative duties took him to the NSW Country Championships as part of the Western Zone side.
He was the only Orange cricketer selected in the Western side after working his way up from the Orange and Mitchell teams.
“Very early on with the representative stuff I was scoring a few handy knocks,” Colley said.
“At club level I was scoring 20 or 30 and getting out. That was frustrating.
“In most of the representative games I was scoring half-centuries.”
Colley believes he played his best cricket during a season in Scotland in 2006.
That’s not to say his 2007-08 season was poor.
He scored 40 against Macquarie Valley and 84 against Lachlan at the Western Zone All-Age carnival.
He smacked 52 against Blue Mountains in Orange’s SCG Country Cup opening round win and 49 against Parkes in their Grinstead Cup loss.
At the NSW Country Championships his best was a 68 against Central Coast.
In the Orange District Cricket Association grand final he produced a man-of-the-match performance, smashing 105 to help Cavaliers to their sixth consecutive first grade title.
“I think I can still do more with my cricket,” Colley said.
