RUGBY UNION
ORANGE Emus have set themselves the task of beating Parkes at Endeavour Oval tomorrow and gaining a bonus point as they attempt to snatch a Blowes Menswear Cup semi-final berth.
Five teams are still vying for the final two places in the top five heading into tomorrow’s last round, making for some anxious moments for all involved.
The results of matches between Emus and Parkes, Forbes and Dubbo Rhinos, Dubbo Kangaroos and Charles Sturt University Bathurst as well as Narromine and Orange City will determine the final make-up of the top five.
Emus are currently in sixth so the clash between fourth-placed Forbes and Rhinos, in fifth, is the only other game other than their own that interests them.
But Emus co-coach Matt Greatbatch wants his players to focus completely on gaining a bonus point in a victory over the Boars at Endeavour Oval.
“We’ve left it in the other teams’ hands and it will come down to winning games. The only thing we can do is win with a bonus point,” he said.
Young Emus prop John Ellis said the players spoke about the possible scenarios at training on Tuesday night and they know a bonus point win would give them a better chance of featuring in the finals.
The 20-year-old acknowledges the forward pack has a big job to provide the backs with plenty of good attacking opportunities as they chase tries.
“We’ve just got to set it up,” Ellis said of what the Emus forward pack has to do tomorrow.
“If we hold on to (the ball) and set it up and do our bit ... hopefully they can score a few tries.”
Ellis is looking forward to tomorrow’s crucial match against Parkes with it one of the biggest games he will play in during his time with Emus, which stretches back to his days as a junior.
Emus have already proven they can beat the Boars having won 36-17 in their round nine clash at Parkes earlier this year.
Emus will face Parkes at Endeavour Oval tomorrow with kick-off at 3.15pm.
In the other Blowes Menswear Cup game this round Cowra host the second-placed Bathurst Bulldogs.
