BOTH Orange and Cowra have lost four competition points and been placed on a good behaviour bond as the fallout continues from their abandoned Central West AFL match last Saturday.
The two clubs have been docked four points by the CWAFL for bringing the league into disrepute following a special meeting at the Hotel Orange on Wednesday night.
Each club has also been placed on a $1000 good behaviour bond until the end of the 2009 season.
The match at Bloomfield was called off in the third quarter last Saturday after umpires Chris Turtle and Paul Willoughby deemed it unsafe to continue following altercations between players from either team.
Orange had been awarded the four points for the win as they were ahead 11.10 (76) to 8.7 (55) when the game was abandoned but they have effectively lost those points as a result of the CWAFL penalty.
“As far as the result, we deemed that the game had been played and that Orange Tigers, having been in front at the time the game was called off, were the winners,” CWAFL president Graeme Grundy said. “And then we sat down to determine whether the clubs involved last week acted in the best interests of the league and we decided that they hadn’t.”
Bizarrely, the CWAFL has also canned the scheduled round 14 clash between the two sides at Cowra’s Mulyan Oval on August 16.
This takes away an opportunity for both teams to add to their competition points tally and also sets up a possible major semi final clash as the next time the Tigers and Blues could meet.
The Tigers are shocked by the penalty handed to the club for their role in the incident as they claim to have done nothing wrong.
“Stunned is the word we would use. We’re mystified by the penalty,” vice-president Greg Cooper said.
Five players, three from Cowra and two from Orange, were reported for striking during the third quarter with Cowra’s Justin Simpson banned by the club from playing for the Blues again following his role in the fracas.
The judiciary was expected to hear the five cases on Wednesday but that was postponed until last night. The outcomes of each case were not known at the time of going to print.
Cowra and Orange remain tied for the lead with 24 points on the CWAFL table after the points deduction with Bathurst still third on 20 points.
