COWRA have banned Justin Simpson from playing for them again after being in the centre of an ugly incident during the Central West AFL clash between the Blues and Orange Tigers at Bloomfield on Saturday.
Simpson, two Cowra team-mates and two Tigers players, have all been reported for striking by umpires Chris Turtle and Paul Willoughby after a melee broke out during the third quarter of the top-of-the-table match.
The umpires then called the game off for safety reasons with Orange leading 11.10 (76) to 8.7 (55).
This came after Simpson had been sent from the field and reported for striking and misconduct during the reserve grade game earlier Saturday afternoon.
The Cowra club yesterday sent a letter to the CWAFL, Orange Tigers, the judiciary and both umpires apologising for the role of their players in the incident and advising Simpson had been banned from playing for the Blues again.
Brendan Reid and Mick McVey from Cowra have also been reported for striking, as has Orange players Clint Grambeau and Luke Whitton for their involvement in the fracas.
And while Orange has been awarded the points as they were 21 points ahead when the game was called off, CWAFL officials have suggested this may not necessarily stand as they investigate the matter further.
“Common sense would suggest that Orange were in front at the time so they would get the points,” CWAFL operations manager Tony Lewis said.
“It will stand until proven otherwise and we will just wait until we get the paper work from the umpires.”
Footage of the incident will be viewed and CWAFL president Graeme Grundy indicated yesterday afternoon he would call a special meeting of the league this week to determine what action should be taken about the result and the players involved.
Saturday’s match also had a big build-up as the controversy surrounding Cowra playing Reid while suspended earlier in the season came to a head during the week.
That situation is also likely to be discussed at the special meeting after Grundy had earlier stated the matter was finished with.
The result, as it stands, sees Orange join Cowra at the top-of-the-table with both teams having lost two games this season.
Orange got out to a seven-goal lead at half-time but Cowra were able to respond early in the third term with three goals.
Tigers coach Craig Donaldson was impressed with the performance of his side before the game was halted and was disappointed the game ended in such a fashion.
“It was a very confusing situation,” Donaldson said.
“We wanted to keep playing. It’s not the way we wanted to win it.”
Cowra host Orange in their third meeting this season in the penultimate round on August 16.
In other CWAFL games, Dubbo recorded a 21-goal victory over Young while Bathurst beat Parkes.
