Watertight: reality not washed up yet

23/07/2008 8:47:00 AM
REALITY TV may be dead, but that hasn’t stopped Orange City Council from peeking into the homes of Orange residents for the next six weeks, in the name of water conservation of course.

Watertight, a council designed program, will see a range of water saving devices installed in 10 homes across the city under the watchful eye of council staff.

The results of the water savings measures will be recorded and made public to highlight how water can be conserved in the home.

Orange City Council received over 20 expressions of interest from willing participants to take part in the Big Brother style program and has whittled the list down to a mix of 10 properties.

These include a single working professional, share boarding house, and several homes with varying sized families.

Cassandra Anslow, of the Central Western Daily, has been selected as one of the program participants and admitted yesterday reducing water consumption from an average of 180 litres per person per day to just 120 would be a daunting challenge.

“I think the program really is about changing habits which is something not easy to do. We only have one water efficient showerhead so council will install all the new fittings on Friday and we will kick off from then onwards,” she said.

Cassandra’s showerheads, tap fixtures, toilets and garden taps will all be fitted with water efficient devices.

Council staff will read participants’ water metres each Thursday for the duration of the program, which will be launched at Orange City Council tonight.
