A throwAWAY line to a friend at a child’s tennis training session has led to a booming business for a local mother.
And with Mother’s Day tomorrow she almost has the entire day covered, food-wise that is.
“I said to a friend that I was making some chicken stock for a chicken and leek pie,” Gina Allen said. “And they asked me to make one for them, so I did.”
The pies come in four different sizes and are very popular, and now include a beef and mushroom variety.
Originally from the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Mrs Allen’s first love was doing the rounds of the chocolate shops in Melbourne.
“I had a friend who organised tours of all the chocolate shops and I became fascinated with the whole process,” she said.
This love of chocolate has resulted in a range of delightful treats available for mum on Mother’s Day.
“I have chocolate truffles and rocky road made from local hazelnuts,” Mrs Allen said. “I also have some fresh strawberries from Borenore Berry Farm, dipped in either dark or milk chocolate.”
Rather than giving Mum scorched toast and cold tea for breakfast it is an easy dinner that would bring a smile to her face.
“As well as the two pie varieties I have apple and blackberry crumble as well as a pear and hazelnut crumble to finish off the meal, made from fruit from the Hillside Orchard.”
These tasty treats will be available today at the Orange Farmers’ Market at Orange Showground.
