Room to improve at Supre building

7/10/2008 7:54:00 AM
ORANGE City Council say they shortly expect to be in receipt of a development application for the transformation of the Supre building, bringing an end to the most controversial sore points in the history of the city.

The building, on the corner of Kite Street and Lords Place, earned the dubious honour of being called the city’s biggest eyesore after it laid dormant and in a state of disrepair since Supre left the building over a decade ago.

The building was sold by Bob Healy in June for an undisclosed amount to a business syndicate headed by Blue Mountains based businessman Ian Stubbs.

While Mr Stubbs was unavailable for comment yesterday, Orange City Council did confirm discussions had taken place between council and the new owners of the building in recent months.

Communications and public relations manager Nick Redmond said the owners planned to redevelop the existing building to create a mix of premier retail and office space.

The building’s facade would remain as is, albeit with changes to the windows and rendering of the substantial amount of brickwork, Mr Redmond said.

Cr Jason Hamling, who served as chairperson of the Orange Tidy Towns Committee on the previous term of council, yesterday said he was ecstatic progress was finally being made to repair the dilapidated site.

“I think pretty much everybody hates the way this building looks so it’s fantastic news,” he said.

“It’s well known that Tidy Towns judges have often criticised the condition and look of the building as one of the reasons holding Orange back from taking out the competition so I think they would be as happy with this news as most Orange people would be.”
