Funk fusion rocks central west

Pubs of the central west will soon be rocking to a new tune; the funk fusion sounds of local outfit, EQD.

With Dale Edwards on sax, Quinn Luxford on bass and Ebbo Brown on drums, the boys are seasoned live performers in the central west the pub scene.

Forming in early 2007, EQD began by jamming in Ebbo’s home studio, recording everything they played to disc. As the quality of the material improved, they began to hand out demo tapes as a way of getting their name out, resulting in their first performance, a 30 minute slot on 2MCE’s “Sounds Live”.

EQD are all about wowing the crowds, getting people dancing and enjoying themselves, according to EQD frontman, Ebbo Brown.

“We are doing things that float our boat, but with a view to floating their boat as well,” Ebbo said.

Influenced by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, and Tool, the band offer a unique style that is a primarily instrumental fast tempo sound, something which Ebbo believes people in the central west have been missing out on.

“The real problem with central west pub gigs is that they are all cover gigs,”he said.

Because they are mainly an instrumental band who mainly play original material, Ebbo believes that they must reach their audience through the power of their grooves.

“People should be able to think ‘wow, this is cool’ and not notice the lack of lyrics,”he said.

On the back of the success of their radio performances as well as the success of their myspace website and demo tapes, the band are receiving a steady flow of bookings. EQD will be playing their first gig on Saturday August 2 at the Park Hotel in Bathurst with more gigs to be announced in the coming weeks.
