Exciting times as kids take their jail break

A visit to Orange Police Station proved almost too exciting for some year 1 students at Sacred Heart Infants School yesterday as they clambered inside the cells and took the opportunity to sit inside a real police car.

As part of the school’s curriculum, the children are learning about how police officers and firefighters contribute to our community.

“They’re really enjoying the experience, in fact they’re all a little too excited,” said Sacred Heart teacher Debbie Prestwidge.

According to Senior Constable Ben Benton having children tour the station is always a rewarding experience for all concerned.

“We take them through a range of things including bike safety and stranger danger,” he said. “Of course they are always interested in looking at the police car and they want to know about our guns but we try to discourage too much talk about that,” he said.
