Club cries poor in bid for PCYC

11/05/2008 6:29:00 PM
THE Orange Ex-Services’ Club Board says it will not buy the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) site in Byng Street because of a major down-turn in trade.

The board of directors decided not to bid for the site because of increased poker machine taxes and decreasing revenue as a result of the recent smoking ban.

The building and land is for sale after the PCYC decided to relocate to a multi-purpose sporting facility at Anzac Park towards the end of the year.

The PCYC building and land is expected to sell for almost $2 million.

Club president Peter Single said the club had identified the land as “a key piece of real estate for possible future expansion and diversification”, but could not buy it because of decreased revenue.

“The smoking law bans and recent increases to pokie taxes have really hit us and a lot of other clubs in the area hard, so the board decided we were not in a position to buy the land,” Mr Single said.

“You can’t underestimate the impact of those changes as well as rising interest rates, petrol costs and all those other things.”

Mr Single said the club’s board and management were very aware of the effect of changes to the industry and would maintain a conservative approach to the club’s long-term future.

He also took aim at the body representing licensed clubs in NSW for failing to actively pursue the issue with the state government.

“I actually don’t think Clubs NSW is pushing hard enough about the impact of these changes.

“To say that they are having no impact is not true because the decision not to purchase the land is case in point,” said Mr Single.
