Groom joins relay for wife

IT is not every day you get married.

And it is not every day your city hosts a Relay for Life.

So when Karla Gassmann and Trevor Roberts realised their wedding would coincide with the relay they had to make a tough choice.

“We almost changed our wedding date when we found out it clashed with the relay,” Karla, a long-time relay supporter, said.

“We were really upset we couldn't take part.”

Instead, Mr and Mrs Roberts and their bridal party did the next best thing, stopping off after their wedding to walk a lap of Endeavour Oval and share their special day with cancer survivors, carers and their supporters.

The group drew curious looks from the crowd as they pulled up in a cavalcade of classic cars and a limousine.

Some people even stopped to ask them if they were in the wrong place, but caught on once the girls threw off their heels and walked on to the field.

The happy couple received applause and calls of congratulations and posed for photos with relay participants as they made their way around the oval before being whisked off to their wedding reception.
