Bunnies’ start catches supporters on the hop

22/04/2008 8:55:15 AM
SOUTH Sydney may have started the NRL season with six straight losses, but Dave Anderson says Rabbitohs’ supporters have developed pretty thick skin over the years.

To be fair, Bunnies fans have had to.

Without a premiership since 1971 and kicked out of the competition in 1999, Souths fans have had to suffer a fair bit over the years.

Even since readmission in 2002 the Rabbitohs have endured the wooden spoon three times.

After actor Russell Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes a Court bought the club in 2006 and Souths broke an 18-year finals’ drought last year things were looking up.

But Sunday’s 30-10 loss against Wests Tigers at the SCG leaves the famous red and greens at the bottom of the NRL ladder with no wins.

“It was pretty poor,” says Rabbitohs diehard Dave Anderson. “It’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen.”

“It’s disappointing after the good work of last year. We’ve failed to deliver and it’s a bit of an embarrassment really.

“There’s thousands of Rabbitohs supporters around here and they’d all be feeling it.”

Dave said the injury to new signing and Souths junior Craig Wing in the opening round hasn’t helped, but added “we just haven’t got the playing roster”.

But Dave said the club had been through tougher times than this and the future still looked bright.

“I’ve been copping some stick, but I’ve been copping it for years,” he said. “All Souths’ fans have I’d say, but it doesn’t bother me.”

For Souths’ fans there is some consolation; at least you’re not a Cronulla supporter.

The Sharks have been chasing a premiership since joining the competition in 1967.
